The service operates primarily overnight, allowing passengers to sleep comfortably on specially designed sleeper trains, arriving refreshed at their destination.

THE ROLE
We are looking for a Fleet Quality & Assurance Engineer to join our Engineering Team here at Caledonian Sleeper. Caledonian Sleeper delivers a safe, reliable fleet of Mk5 coaches across the UK, providing an iconic guest experience. The role of Fleet Assurance Engineer provides engineering assurance to support internal teams and delivery partners, operating within a complex contractual stakeholder environment to robustly scrutinise and manage Engineering Change (including fleet modifications, maintenance intervals and limits and overhaul requires), Safety Related Defects and, upholding fleet integrity for guests and crews.
The role drives continuous improvement in how we manage engineering processes and related governance, contributing to safer, more reliable operations and better collaboration across teams.
This role will report to the Fleet Engineering Manager and will develop and maintain relationships with key engineering suppliers, industry bodies and internal stakeholders to foster collaboration and alignment on standards and performance. CSL Business
RESPONSIBLITIES
Within the following key competencies, our Fleet Quality & Assurance Engineer will successfully:
Technical Knowledge
• Lead fleet engineering assurance activities, including the management of Engineering Change.
• Responsible for configuration management of the fleet to ensure the status of the assets and documentation is clear and aligned.
• Own and optimise the appropriate Engineering Safety Management System procedures.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
• Own and lead the engineering quality management process with support from the wider team.
• Management of non-conformance including tracking and close out across the team.
Risk & Safety Management
• Act as the key focal point for all fleet safety matters to ensure systems are updated and follow up actions are clearly attributed.
• Own and lead the Safety Related Defect (SRD) and National Incident Reporting (NIR) processes, ensuring issues are robustly managed and risks are mitigated.
• Ensure fleet risks are identified, mitigated, and tracked systematically.
Data Analysis & Reporting
• Support and undertake technical investigations with comprehensive root cause analysis and reporting.
• Provide clear documentation and evidence for safety and quality assurance activities.
• Produce and present reports on areas of responsibilities.
Communication & Leadership
• Create a best practice collaborative environment across all areas of responsibility.
• Promote a culture of continual improvement within the team and the wider business.
• Act as an ambassador for the company and the fleet in all matters.
• Support additional relevant activities as required by the business and remain adaptable to evolving accountabilities.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
• Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• Chartered engineer or working towards this status with a commitment to CPD.
• Experience in engineering assurance, risk management, and quality compliance.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and reporting skills.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
• Support with engineering on call duties up to 1 week in every 5–6 weeks.
• Previous rolling stock engineering experience
Desirable
• Knowledge of rail industry standards, safety regulations, and quality management systems
• Specific knowledge of locomotive hauled rolling stock
• Willingness to travel to support business needs as required.
